STREETWEAR

Germany 2022, 50′
Director, Cinematography, Editing: Mark Sieczkarek

In the art and dance film Streetwear, multiple layers weave together artistically. The performers dance with the places, corners, and angles of the city of Wuppertal. Stairs, public spaces, a football field, and graffiti-sprayed walls appear, providing the backdrop for the filmed choreographies. Cycles of materials become visible – everyday materials collected by artist Mark Sieczkarek and transformed, with sewing machine and much handwork, into unique and humorous costumes.

Among the performers are renowned dancers connected to Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, such as Julie Shanahan, Ophelia Young, Nayung Kim, and Kenji Takagi. Wuppertal-based artists from music, such as Karlo Wentzel, as well as Butoh dancer Udo Sträßer, also appear. Alongside the performers, the city of Wuppertal and, above all, the curious costume creations of Streetwear make a striking impression. These costumes develop a fascinating life of their own, animated by 22 performers and cinematically staged by Mark Sieczkarek.
